Most participants in a non-representative survey by SRF’s dialog community support giving police more powers to prevent and respond to unauthorised demonstrations. Eighty-seven per cent said police should be able to act more proactively.

Demonstrations have recently escalated in France, Italy and Belgium. In Switzerland, clashes at unauthorised protests have also prompted debate, most recently in Zurich.

Many contributors also called for tougher penalties for people who cause damage. One user argued that people who deliberately damage property should be held accountable, while another said those who set cars alight or loot shops should be arrested quickly.

Some participants said peaceful demonstrations can be exploited by people who engage in violence. One called for extremism to be tackled and punished by all lawful means.

Others urged police to speak with potentially violent demonstrators early, rather than relying on tougher measures. One contributor said people should be made to understand the harm and costs caused by destroying objects, buildings and vehicles.

Another participant opposed expanding police powers, arguing that politicians should focus on addressing demonstrators’ concerns. They said the current Gen Z protests have serious causes and that more forceful police intervention could worsen the situation.
