The state forest nursery in Weiden am See has expanded its work from planting trees and protecting soil to supporting nature and biodiversity, ORF reports. The nursery has been operating for nearly 80 years.

Projects include planting trees along cycle paths, landscaping an agro-photovoltaic installation and creating a windbreak belt for wildcats near the S7 road.

The nursery grows about 100,000 trees and shrubs each year across 12 hectares. It raises native plants, with a particular focus on species better able to withstand heat and drought as the climate changes.

Staff use water sparingly, both because it is a valuable resource and to encourage plants to develop strong root systems before they are planted out.

Hedges that support biodiversity and protect birds have become a greater priority, as have planting projects at photovoltaic installations, agro-photovoltaic sites and private properties. Trees and shrubs from the nursery are planted throughout Burgenland.
