Salzburg culture manager Alfred Winter has died at the age of 80, ORF reported. Funeral company Jung confirmed his death to the Salzburger Nachrichten on November 5.

Winter was best known for founding the Scene of Youth in the 1970s, creating a platform for alternative cultural events as an alternative to festival culture. The initiative attracted artists including Gidon Kremer and Nikolaus Harnoncourt.

In 1978, Winter took over the department for special cultural projects, established under Governor Wilfried Haslauer Sr. As a publisher and culture manager for the state of Salzburg, he also organised major exhibitions and founded initiatives including the Salzburg Treasury, the Goldegg Dialogues, the Tauriska association and the Leopold Kohr Academy.
