Austria, emergency services, red cross

A paramedic who helped deliver Tobias in an ambulance 21 years ago now works alongside him on emergency calls for the Red Cross in Pöggstall, in Melk district, ORF reported.

Tobias, 21, joined the Red Cross service in October 2025 for his compulsory civilian service. He enjoyed the work and the team, and decided to continue as a volunteer after completing it. He and Peter Trötzmüller have recently begun responding to emergencies together.

On 2 November 2005, Trötzmüller and fellow paramedic Norbert Wurzer were called to an expectant mother. With the birth imminent, they decided not to continue to hospital and contacted Amstetten State Hospital. Tobias was born at about 00:45 in the ambulance garage.

Tobias had long known that Trötzmüller was present at his birth. They now live in the same town and knew the story before becoming colleagues. Trötzmüller, who has worked for the Red Cross in Pöggstall since February 1997, still counts the delivery among his most unusual calls.
