A board-game club in Spillern brings children and adults together for monthly games, ORF reports. The association, “Bewahrer imaginärer Welten” (Keepers of Imaginary Worlds), has around 40 members and has been active since 2008.
Children and teenagers are regulars at the gatherings. Younger players meet on the ground floor, while older members play in the basement. Guests usually bring games from home, often their favourites.
Eleven-year-old Benjamin said he liked that playing meant spending less time looking at a phone. Seven-year-old David said he enjoyed games set in unfamiliar worlds with imaginative creatures.
Member Manuela Weinzinger said the games encouraged children’s imagination and gave them a break from digital media. Club chairman Martin Brunnhuber said people were drawn to board games because they wanted to meet in person around a table.
Players travel to the meetings from nearby towns, Vienna and the Waldviertel. Competition and lively discussion are part of the gatherings, but playing together remains the focus.
