Vienna has opened the main registration period for places in municipal kindergartens for the 2027-28 year, ORF reports. Parents who apply by the end of December have a better chance of getting a place at their preferred kindergarten.
The order in which applications are submitted during the main period does not affect allocation. Places are assigned according to set criteria, including whether parents are employed and whether a sibling already attends the kindergarten. Applications are also possible outside the main period, but the number of available places is limited. Parents will be told by the end of March whether they can expect a place.
The City of Vienna website lists public and private childcare places, as well as children’s groups, childminders and after-school care. Children in their final year before starting school in Austria are required to attend kindergarten, making early registration important for families planning childcare.
Children need a customer number to register at a private facility. It can be obtained from the City of Vienna’s kindergarten service centres. Applying for a place in a municipal kindergarten automatically generates the number.
