A proposed 5,000-seat stadium for Salzburg Austria in Liefering has sparked debate over whether a new venue is the best use of public money, ORF reports. Salzburg Mayor Bernhard Auinger of the Social Democratic Party proposed the project.
The club and its supporters want a suitable home ground, and the team attracts more than 1,000 spectators each week. But with public budgets under pressure, ORF editor Christopher Pöhl says alternatives should be considered.
One option is to review FC Liefering’s use of the Red Bull Arena in Kleßheim, which it shares with FC Red Bull Salzburg. Liefering, despite playing in the second division, often draws crowds comparable to lower-league clubs. It must still meet league infrastructure requirements, including floodlighting and suitable pitch conditions.
The existing stadium in Grödig, in the Flachgau district, could be an alternative for Liefering. It has the necessary facilities, including under-soil heating that was installed in connection with the club’s use of the venue. If Salzburg Austria cannot play in Grödig, Liefering could potentially return there, freeing capacity at the Red Bull Arena.
Salzburg Austria supporters oppose using the arena in Kleßheim for historical and sporting reasons, helping explain the call for a separate ground. Whether those concerns justify funding a new stadium with city and provincial money is a separate question, ORF says. The debate also raises how public investment in one club should be weighed against the needs of other sports clubs in Salzburg.
