The car known as K.I.T.T. from the 1980s television series Knight Rider will be auctioned in Zurich on November 7, with an estimated price of 250,000 to 500,000 Swiss francs, SRF reports. Its owner, Lucerne musician Urs Kunz, hopes it will remain in Switzerland.
The modified 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am was one of several cars used in the series or on promotional tours. Kunz’s car was taken on actor David Hasselhoff’s European music tour in 1987.
Before Kunz bought it from a record company 27 years ago, the car had been stolen while on display in Italy and later found in the Czech Republic. Its electronics were badly damaged, and it was in poor condition when Kunz acquired it.
Kunz has since had the car extensively restored in Giswil. It now drives and speaks again, but it is not permitted on Swiss roads, in part because of its specially shaped steering wheel and rear lights behind dark plexiglass.
Kunz would prefer to see the car in a museum. His first choice would be the Swiss Museum of Transport in Lucerne, near his home.
