Detached-house sales across Austria rose by a quarter in the first half of 2026, with the Austrian state of Lower Austria recording the most transactions, ORF reports. About 6,400 houses changed hands nationwide.
In Lower Austria, 1,988 houses were sold, 342 more than in the same period a year earlier. That was as many as in Carinthia, Tyrol, Salzburg, Vienna and Burgenland combined, according to an analysis by real estate company Remax. Lower Austria accounted for about 31 percent of all registered detached-house sales in Austria.
The average price of a detached house in Lower Austria was 290,842 euros, up about 6 percent. The most expensive houses were in the districts of Mödling, Tulln, Baden, Korneuburg, Bruck an der Leitha and St. Pölten, as well as the city of St. Pölten, where average prices ranged from 312,000 to 600,000 euros.
The cheapest houses were in the northern parts of the Waldviertel and Weinviertel regions, in the districts of Hollabrunn, Horn, Zwettl, Gmünd and Waidhofen an der Thaya, with prices below 180,000 euros. Remax said the proceeds from selling one house in Mödling could buy five houses in Waidhofen an der Thaya.
Remax attributed the boom to the rising cost and scarcity of building plots, higher construction costs and more expensive financing. As a result, more prospective buyers are considering purchasing an existing house, renovating it and moving in soon.
