Gerlinde Grünn will lead the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) in Upper Austria’s state election in autumn 2027, ORF reported. The Linz city councillor and parliamentary group leader was elected to the top spot with broad support at a state party meeting on October 24. Daniel Steiner was chosen for second place.
Grünn has served on Linz city council since 2009. The party said it was relying on her years of local political experience. “It is time for a credible force for social justice to enter the state parliament,” Grünn said.
The KPÖ needs at least 4% of the vote to enter the state parliament. It received 0.8% in 2021. The party is hoping for momentum from recent election successes in Graz and Salzburg. In Graz, Elke Kahr was confirmed as mayor at the end of June.
