Public transport in Tirol will be free from 8 p.m. on October 31 until 5 a.m. on November 1, ORF reports. The offer excludes long-distance trains and is intended to discourage people from driving after drinking alcohol or taking drugs.
The free service has been available on New Year’s Eve for the past three years, but this is the first time it has been extended to Halloween. Tirol transport councillor Rene Zumtobel urged people who have been drinking to use public transport, ride with someone sober or take a taxi home.
The state government, VVT and IVB also urged passengers to treat staff and fellow travellers respectfully and follow public transport rules. IVB managing director Ekkehard Allinger-Csollich said Halloween was one of the busiest nights of the year for the company after New Year’s Eve. IVB staff will work with police on buses and trams to help ensure safety and good conduct, he said.
