A midwife-led birth house is planned for Feldkirch, with the project’s plans presented to potential supporters at the Women’s Museum in Hittisau. ORF reported that a fundraising association, Raum für Geburt, has been set up to support the project.
The building is planned next to the Antoniushaus on Feldkirch’s Blasenberg. The Sisters of the Cross have made the land available under a building lease. Project lead Brigitta Soraperra said the initiative has enough capital to establish a foundation to receive contributions, particularly from foundations and companies. The association will also give members of the public a way to participate.
Association chair Nina Flatz said the project aims to give women a choice about where they give birth. She said birth rooms were available in Switzerland and Germany and that the time was right for one in Vorarlberg.
Two architects have designed the building, which will include two birth rooms focused on privacy and comfort. Midwife and architect Anka Dür said birth spaces had received too little attention in architecture, despite the sensitivity of childbirth. The plans prioritise a protected space where privacy can be maintained, said midwife Susanne Haunold-Sam, who has attended about 4,500 births.
The building is designed to be practical as well as comfortable, with wood and clay as the main construction materials. Architect Monja Krötz said clay can help regulate moisture, limit overheating and absorb odours. The organisers hope to complete the project by 2028.
