Mountain rescuers saved two young hikers who lost their way in fresh snow at the Kaiserschild mountain on Monday, ORF Steiermark reported. The 19-year-old woman and 20-year-old man were uninjured.
The pair were walking along marked trail 683 towards the Kaiserschild in the Leoben district when they became disoriented at about 1,780 metres because of snow that had fallen overnight. Unable to continue, they called for help.
Mountain rescue workers from Eisenerz climbed up to them and found them suffering from the cold. They warmed the hikers in an emergency tent and gave them hot tea before escorting them down the mountain with ropes.
Nineteen members of the Eisenerz mountain rescue team and an alpine police officer took part in the operation. The hike was not guided, and police said there was no indication of third-party fault.
