Klosterneuburg has opened a new municipal works yard on the former Magdeburg barracks grounds, the first milestone in plans for a new district, ORF reports. The city expects the first homes and a school campus to be built there by 2031.
The 14.5 million euro facility brings several municipal services together under one roof. Previously, the works yard operated from several locations across the city. Dietmar Schuster, head of the works yard department, said residents would now have a single place to visit for services spanning the works yard, construction directorate and administration.
The Magdeburg barracks closed in 2013. The monastery of Klosterneuburg bought part of the grounds in 2015 for 9.5 million euros, and the former barracks were later used as accommodation for refugees. The city also purchased part of the land, and planning for its future development began.
Mayor Christoph Kaufmann said plans for a school campus for the Private Gymnasium of the Archdiocese of Vienna were already under way. The project has received funding commitments from the federal government and the state, and is in the planning phase.
The new district is planned for the grounds of the former barracks, which have been vacant for much of the period since they closed.
