Some 215 wild animals were reported killed on roads in Vorarlberg during the 2025-26 hunting year, an average of one every 41 hours, ORF reports. The most cases were recorded in Bregenz district, according to the Austrian Road Safety Board.

The board’s analysis of wildlife casualty statistics found 85 deaths in Bregenz district, 56 in Bludenz and 50 in Feldkirch. It said the actual toll is likely higher because not all collisions are reported.

Wildlife collisions also injured four people in Vorarlberg in 2025: two in Feldkirch district and one each in Bludenz and Bregenz. Across Austria, 322 people were injured.

The board advises drivers to take extra care in autumn, especially on overcast days and along roads where animals often cross. Drivers should reduce speed, be ready to brake and watch both sides of the road, as more animals may follow the first.

If an animal appears on the road, sudden swerving can increase the danger, for example by causing a collision with oncoming traffic or a tree. If a crash cannot be avoided, the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club recommends braking hard, holding the steering wheel firmly and staying in lane.

After a collision with wildlife, drivers should secure the scene and notify the police, even if the animal runs away. Injured animals should not be touched.
