Zurich residents will pay more to park in blue zones from January 2027, when the city introduces a new permit system, SRF reported Thursday. Exceptions that would allow businesses to park on pavements remain blocked.

Under the new system, residents must first use more expensive parking spaces assigned to their residential building. They can get an annual blue-zone permit only if those spaces are full. Permit prices will depend on a vehicle’s weight and drivetrain. While the cheapest permits are expected to cost more than 500 francs, charges for heavy petrol SUVs could approach 1,000 francs. Permits previously cost 300 francs.

The city council’s system follows a proposal approved by 52.8 percent of voters. The council had initially proposed a flat fee of 540 francs. Existing permits remain valid until April 30, 2027, at the latest, but residents must apply for new ones by January 15.

Standard permits for businesses with up to six number plates will cost 360 francs, down from 480 francs, the city said. But the Zurich district council overturned permissions that would have allowed businesses to park on pavements. The city parliament has decided to challenge that ruling in the administrative court.

The Centre party called it scandalous to implement the rules without the business exemptions. The FDP said it was considering legal action and urged the city council to wait for the court proceedings. The SVP called the approach unacceptable and said it misled voters and distorted their decision.

Some parts of the new rules are already in effect. Taxi-stand permits, available since January 1, 2026, cost 480 francs a year and are restricted to people with cantonal taxi and vehicle permits. Since spring 2026, day permits for blue zones, tradespeople and access to restricted zones have also been available digitally.
