Sucht Schweiz is warning about synthetic cannabinoids in vape liquids after initial cases were reported in Zurich and St Gallen, SRF reports. The products, known as “Baller liquids”, “Zombie liquids” or “cracker liquids”, are used in e-cigarettes and are covered by Switzerland’s Narcotics Act.

The Zurich cantonal police said it knew of a small number of cases involving the substances, but it was too early to say whether they could become a wider trend. Sucht Schweiz spokesperson Lucas Philippoz said the development was concerning, particularly because the ingredients in the liquids are often unknown and their risks are difficult to assess.

Synthetic cannabinoids are intended to mimic THC, but are often much stronger, according to Sucht Schweiz. Possible effects include a racing heart, loss of consciousness, seizures, hallucinations and psychosis. In extreme cases, consumption can be fatal.

Experts are especially concerned about the risks to young people, among whom e-cigarettes are already popular. Philippoz said sweet or fruity flavours and colourful packaging were aimed at this age group. The liquids could also appear harmless, leading some young people to think they contain only safe flavourings.

The extent to which the products are available in Switzerland is unclear. Zurich’s addiction prevention service said it knew of no cases in the city’s schools, but was monitoring developments and advising schools about new substances. Sucht Schweiz advises parents and teachers to stay alert and talk with young people. Anyone who suspects a product contains synthetic cannabinoids should avoid using it.
