Deutsche Bahn will close the high-speed line between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt from October 30 to December 12 for modernisation, BR reports. The closure will affect regional and long-distance passengers, with diversions and replacement buses planned.
Regional trains, including Regional Express 1 between Munich, Ingolstadt and Nuremberg, will be diverted via Treuchtlingen or Augsburg. Replacement buses will run between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt.
Long-distance trains between Munich and Berlin will continue to run directly at least once an hour, but journeys will take about 45 minutes longer. Services between Nuremberg and Berlin will operate without restrictions.
Trains between Munich and Hamburg will run via Kassel every two hours instead of hourly. In the alternate hour, services will begin and end in Nuremberg. Direct trains between Munich and Frankfurt via Nuremberg will be cancelled; Deutsche Bahn recommends travelling via Stuttgart.
More than 160 kilometres of new rails will be installed between Allersberg, Kinding and Ingolstadt Nord. Deutsche Bahn says about 10,000 tonnes of material will need to be moved. The work will also include replacing several sets of points and inspecting tunnels. The company says the rails need replacing after about 20 years because of the high speeds on the line.
