A plan to build an indoor ski hall in Sieggraben, Burgenland, fell through more than 20 years ago after difficulties acquiring land and the withdrawal of investors, ORF reports.
The proposal dates to 2005. The hall was to be built on a meadow in Sieggraben, a village in the Mattersburg district. Mayor Andreas Gradwohl said the location’s terrain would have made the project possible, and investors were expected to finance it.
But the public sector could not acquire the necessary plots, Gradwohl said, and the investors eventually pulled out. He said the municipal council had not been given information that explained why the project failed. Residents approached by ORF in Sieggraben declined to discuss the proposal.
Gradwohl said the idea had not been ruled out entirely, adding that the municipality would be open to discussing it if it came up again.
The proposal has resurfaced as debate over a possible ski hall for alpine sports has intensified in Austria. The article links the discussion to warmer months, less rainfall and melting glaciers, as well as increased training trips by Austrian alpine skiers to South America.
