A hospital in Salzburg plans to launch a monthly support group for breast cancer patients, ORF reports. The first meeting is scheduled for October 27.

The Barmherzigen Brüder Hospital says there has not previously been a breast cancer support group in the city of Salzburg or the neighboring districts of Flachgau and Tennengau. Around 450 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Salzburg state each year, out of about 7,000 patients nationwide. Women account for around 99 percent of those affected.

The meetings are intended to provide a confidential space for patients to share their experiences. Organizers are also considering talks by experts. Doris Hasenknopf, a breast care nurse at the hospital who initiated the group, said patients had repeatedly expressed a wish to connect with others who understood the experience firsthand.

Chances of recovery have improved in recent years and are currently estimated at between 80 and 90 percent. The Austrian Cancer Aid also offers psycho-oncological counseling and support in Salzburg, connects people with support groups and networks, and provides financial assistance to people with cancer in difficult circumstances.
