Stegersbach will become a roller sports centre for south-eastern Austria, with the federal government, Burgenland and the municipality investing 6.2 million euros in two new sports halls, ORF reports. Construction began on Tuesday.
The 50-metre-long halls are designed for different roller sports disciplines and will be usable year-round. They will form the centrepiece of a planned federal performance centre for roller sports, due to be completed in Stegersbach by mid-2028.
Andreas Freiberger, president of the Austrian Roller Sports Federation, said the facilities would include professional areas for athletic conditioning, skills and goalkeeper training. He hopes national teams, young athletes and international top teams will train there throughout the year.
The centre is intended to support both elite and grassroots sport, as well as school sports. Sport State Secretary Michaela Schmidt said it would expand Austria’s sports offering, while Burgenland’s sports councillor, Heinrich Dorner, said it would benefit both elite and youth athletes.
Stegersbach has a longstanding connection to roller sports. The Tigers club was founded nearly 30 years ago and has won the Austrian inline skater hockey championship several times. Its current hall opened 20 years ago.
