An 80-year-old spruce from the Wienerwald forest near Pressbaum has arrived at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, where it will be the centrepiece of the Christmas market, ORF reports.
The tree was felled the day before delivery and brought to Vienna in the early hours. Its journey from the Breitenfurt forestry district of Austrian Federal Forests near Pressbaum to the palace courtyard was about 20 kilometres.
The spruce must be decorated by November 6, when the market opens in the courtyard. Austrian Federal Forests chief Andreas Gruber said the tree was an unusual find for the Wienerwald, a region characterised by deciduous forest.
This year’s market will have 95 stalls offering food and traditional crafts. A new panoramic terrace at the Star Salon will overlook the market. Other plans include a weekly ice disco, activities in a craft hut and musical events.
After the market, parts of the tree will be used as toys and food for animals at Schönbrunn Zoo.
