Three baby squirrels found in the Flachgau region have been taken to the Pfotenhilfe animal sanctuary in Lochen, ORF reported. Two were found cold and hungry on a forest path in Elixhausen, while the third was rescued on the Bleckwand hiking trail near Strobl.
The young squirrels, some of which had not yet opened their eyes, are being bottle-fed and cared for by Pfotenhilfe director Johanna Stadler, who raises numerous orphaned wild animals each year.
The squirrels were born late in the year. In the wild, their mother would care for them for three to four months, until they could fend for themselves. They are expected to be ready for release around Christmas, so they will spend the winter warm and protected, with food, in one of the sanctuary’s large aviaries, Stadler said.
