Rankweil, traffic, Vorarlberg

The market town of Rankweil will introduce a 30 km/h speed limit across its built-up area from the end of October, ORF reports. Main traffic and collector roads, including Stiegstrasse, Bifangstrasse and Merowingerstrasse, will be exempt.

The measure is part of Rankweil’s road and paths plan, approved by the municipal council in April 2022. The municipality says the lower speed limit is intended to improve protection for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly children and older people, and to reduce stopping distances, the severity of accidents and traffic noise.

Deputy Mayor Johannes Herburger said the change would benefit the whole town and make speed limits clearer for drivers by reducing how often they change.

The plan has been introduced in stages. The Brederis district was the first to get measures in April 2023, with further changes elsewhere in Rankweil following through spring 2024. Nenzing introduced a 30 km/h limit when the school year began.

About a dozen Vorarlberg municipalities have imposed 30 km/h limits on municipal roads, including Bregenz, Altach, Höchst, Lochau, Meiningen and Satteins. A change to Austria’s Road Traffic Act two years ago also made it easier for municipalities to introduce the limit on state roads.
