A 41-year-old hiker was rescued by police helicopter after severe cramps left him unable to continue climbing the Grimming mountain in Liezen district on Sunday, ORF reported.

The man from Vienna had set out early with a friend from Carinthia to climb the 2,351-metre mountain via its northern side. Both were equipped with climbing helmets, harnesses and mountain boots, police said.

The cramps began around midday and affected the hiker’s whole body. His companion called for help. The helicopter crew lifted the man out using a cable and took him to a landing site at Kulm. He was then taken by ambulance to Bad Aussee Regional Hospital.

Six mountain rescuers and Liezen Alpine Police also took part in the rescue.
