Burgenland, fuel prices, motoring

Peter Rezar has been confirmed as ARBÖ president with all delegate votes at the organisation’s regional conference in Neutal on Friday, ORF reported. He called for measures to ease costs for motorists and an excess-profits tax on oil companies.

With fuel prices high, Rezar proposed temporarily increasing the commuter allowance by 50 per cent and raising the commuter tax credit to eight euros. He said the changes could ease costs for 110,000 commuters in Burgenland.

To lower petrol and diesel prices for all motorists, Rezar also called for a temporary cut to mineral oil tax and a suspension of the CO2 tax. He said the measures should be funded through a national excess-profits tax on oil companies. Rezar also backed expanding electric mobility to reduce dependence on oil imports.

Rezar announced plans to build a new ARBÖ vehicle inspection centre in Oberwart. A suitable plot has been purchased and planning has begun. The organisation will also invest in facilities at its locations in the other districts.

Vice-presidents Robert Tauber and Wolfgang Sodl, along with the entire ARBÖ regional executive, were also elected unanimously. Martin Heissenberger was confirmed as regional director.
