Carinthia continues construction of Lieserschlucht cycle path
Construction of the cycle path through the Lieserschlucht gorge is continuing, with the Katschberg Road closed again in the work zone, ORF reported.
The path will run between Spittal and Lake Millstatt and is being built mostly as a bridge to create space for cyclists beside the road. Along a 2.4-kilometre stretch, concrete cantilever slabs are being anchored into the rock without supporting pillars, leaving the path suspended above the Lieser River.
By the planned opening in two years, the project is expected to use 6,500 cubic metres of concrete, 700 tonnes of steel and 8,000 metres of piles. The federal government, Carinthia and local municipalities are jointly investing 14.4 million euros. A further 8.8 million euros is being spent on construction work on the Katschberg Road, or B99.
More than 50 road projects are currently under way in Carinthia. Work in the gorge is expected to continue until the end of November, and the road will remain closed until then. Afterward, the B99 will be open to traffic on one lane toward Seeboden. Traffic travelling from Seeboden to Spittal will be diverted via Trebesing and Fratres.
