Austria’s railway operator ÖBB has officially opened the modernised main station in Villach after investing €92 million over the past two years. ORF reported that the work was intended to improve passenger comfort and rail operations as traffic increases with the Koralmbahn railway.
Long-distance platforms have been extended to 420 metres and fitted with glass shelters to protect passengers from the cold in winter. The station also has an improved passenger information system, step-free access to the covered platforms, expanded bicycle parking and a new entrance on its eastern side. Photovoltaic panels have been installed on the platform roofs.
Infrastructure Minister Peter Hanke said the upgrade strengthens an important transport hub in southern Austria and would make rail travel more attractive. ÖBB finance director Manuela Waldner said work to prepare the station for increased demand on the new southern and Tauern routes began in early 2024 and was carried out while the station remained operational.
The Koralmbahn carries nearly 10,000 passengers a day, Waldner said. She added that the opening of the Semmering Base Tunnel, expected in about three years, would bring further activity to the southern rail route.
Some work at Villach station will continue until next year, including the removal of construction facilities.
