Geneva Swiss People’s Party national councillor Céline Amaudruz is the first to stand for election to the Swiss Federal Council seat expected to become vacant when Guy Parmelin leaves, SRF reports. Initial reactions to the vacancy were refusals, prompting questions about whether the government post is still a dream job.
SRF Federal Palace correspondent Christine Wanner says the role has become more demanding as government work grows more complex and unpredictable. Federal councillors face packed schedules and must often be available around the clock, with little freedom to disconnect or protect their private lives.
The job involves fixed commitments such as Federal Council meetings, news conferences and discussions with political parties, parliamentary chambers and committees. It also includes public appearances, conferences and diplomatic receptions. As Wanner notes, the only appointment a Federal Council member chooses is the timing of their resignation.
There are several reasons others have yet to declare their candidacies. There is still time, and potential candidates need to assess whether the role fits with family and professional commitments and whether they have a realistic chance of election. Parties also need to put together a shortlist.
Timing can be a strategic consideration, too: candidates who announce early face a longer period of media and public scrutiny. Wanner also says people in Switzerland tend not to promote themselves immediately by claiming they are the best or most suitable for the job.
