Electric cars made up 31 percent of new passenger car registrations in Tyrol in September, a record share, ORF reported. The figures from Statistics Austria show that electric vehicles accounted for 20 percent of new registrations as recently as February, compared with 3 percent in 2019.

Tyrol currently has more than 27,000 electric cars, just over 6 percent of all passenger cars. Their share is expected to keep growing in the coming years.

The Austrian Transport Club said electric vehicles could also help stabilise Tyrol’s power grid. Managed charging could direct cars to charge when solar power production is high, allowing them to store surplus electricity where storage capacity is limited and the grid risks being overloaded.

Company cars could play an important role in the transition, the club said. Around two-thirds of new vehicle registrations in Austria are made by companies or other legal entities. The club called for an end to tax benefits for company cars with combustion engines.

In Austria, fully electric vehicles are exempt from the standard fuel consumption tax, and businesses can claim input tax deductions when buying them. Their exemption from motor-related insurance tax ended in April 2025.
