A12, construction zone, road safety

Asfinag will re-examine a six-kilometre construction zone on the A12 Inntal motorway after a third fatal crash there, ORF reported. The latest collision happened on Tuesday near Silz, when a truck hit a car and killed its 36-year-old driver.

The 62-year-old truck driver crossed into oncoming traffic and struck the car, pushing it against a noise barrier. A second car, driven by a 38-year-old woman, was also hit and dragged along. The truck driver told police he had felt unwell and blacked out. Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

The construction zone runs from Mötz to the Simmering Galerie, where road and bridge repairs have been under way since March. A 33-year-old woman died in a head-on collision there on 18 August. In September, another driver was killed in a head-on crash with a truck.

Asfinag spokesperson Alexander Holzedl said the operator would review the work zone as soon as possible in coordination with authorities, police and experts. The company said it currently saw no direct link between the crash cause and the construction setup or traffic management, based on its investigations so far. Part of the work is due to finish by the end of October, shortening the section where traffic shares the opposing carriageway. Repairs are expected to be complete in early December.
