Aargau’s veterinary service has seized 13 horses and 40 dogs from a farm in the Fricktal region after the operator failed to comply with a ban on keeping animals, SRF reported. Authorities said she had repeatedly breached animal welfare rules, including by providing inadequate feed and housing.
The animals were taken on October 7. They include 13 Appaloosa horses and 40 dogs, Australian Shepherds and Border Collies. The operator had been subject to a full ban on keeping animals since February and was required to give them up by mid-July. Authorities said they intervened after she failed to do so and did not cooperate. Police attended because circumstances at the farm were unclear. The woman will be reported to the authorities.
During the operation, officials found insufficient bedding for the horses, poor stall conditions, a lack of bedding for the dogs and no water. The dogs were not socialised, and authorities also found signs of neglect, particularly among the horses. One horse had severe leg injuries and had to be euthanised. Officials also found a heavy parasite infestation and inadequate hoof care among the horses.
The full condition of the animals is not yet known, as the dogs have not all been examined by a veterinarian. The deputy cantonal veterinary officer said their condition did not appear generally poor at first glance, and the canton believes it may be possible to find new owners for them. The dogs are currently in an animal shelter and the horses in a suitable institution.
The canton said it had not acted earlier because there were not enough places for the horses, partly due to a shortage of feed. It is now seeking permanent placements for the animals itself after failing to establish cooperation with Swiss Animal Protection. Interested people can contact the canton through its website.
