ÖAMTC advises careful charging to extend e-bike battery life
Correct charging and storage can help extend e-bike battery life, while improper handling can cause batteries to deteriorate faster than age alone, ORF reports, citing advice from the mobility club ÖAMTC.
For everyday use, ÖAMTC experts recommend keeping lithium-ion batteries between 20 and 80 percent charged. Charging to 100 percent regularly can speed up cell ageing; a full charge is generally needed only before longer rides.
For storage lasting several weeks or months, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. As a general guide, store the battery at about 40 to 60 percent charge, in a dry, frost-free place away from direct sunlight, and check its charge level occasionally. Heat is more damaging over time than cold. Cold can temporarily reduce a battery’s range and performance.
ÖAMTC says damage often results from impacts, unsuitable chargers, tampering or improper repairs. Use only original chargers or models approved by the manufacturer, and do not attempt to repair a damaged battery yourself.
Deformation, smoke, leaking fluid or unusual heat are warning signs. Stop using the battery and have it checked by a specialist.
