Drinking water in Oberzeiring, in the Murtal district, is currently unsuitable for human consumption and must be boiled before use, ORF reports, citing the municipality of Pölstal.
Water from the public supply network must be boiled for three minutes before drinking. Showering is safe, Mayor Ewald Haingartner said.
The municipality is investigating the cause and working to clean the contaminated water as quickly as possible. A final report is expected later on Tuesday and should identify the bacteria or elevated readings found in the water. The municipality has also requested help from experts and authorities.
Oberzeiring gets its drinking water from 18 springs. Haingartner said identifying the source of the contamination could be difficult.
