About 40,000 runners are expected at the Munich Marathon on Sunday, with road closures and changes to bus and tram services along the route, BR reports.

The event is set to draw a record number of participants, according to the organisers. The course passes through Schwabing-West, Maxvorstadt, Schwabing, the Old Town, the English Garden, Bogenhausen, Berg am Laim and Au-Haidhausen.

Several bus and tram lines will be diverted or temporarily suspended between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Munich Transport Company will publish details in its app and through announcements and displays.

Around 12,000 people have registered for the full 42.195-kilometre marathon. The programme also includes a half-marathon and a 10-kilometre race. Runners will set off from the Olympic Park, travel along Leopoldstrasse and through Marienplatz and the English Garden, then head towards Bogenhausen and Berg am Laim. The course passes through the Werksviertel near Ostbahnhof before returning through the city centre to the Olympic Park.

The marathon weekend began on Friday with about 4,000 pupils taking part in the first Munich School Run at the Olympic Park. A stage programme there includes talks with athletes, bands and DJs, alongside stands from around 50 brands and exhibitors.
