About 40,000 people are expected to take part in this year’s Munich Marathon, a record for the event, BR reported. The races on Sunday will bring road closures and diversions, while several bus and tram services will be rerouted or interrupted.

Closures and diversions will affect the route through Schwabing-West, Maxvorstadt, Schwabing, the Old Town, the English Garden, Bogenhausen, Berg am Laim and Au-Haidhausen. Several bus and tram lines will be affected between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Munich Transport Company will provide details through its app, announcements and displays.

About 12,000 runners have registered for the full 42.195-kilometre marathon. The programme also includes a half-marathon and a 10-kilometre race. The route starts and finishes at the Olympic Park, passing Leopoldstrasse and Marienplatz before crossing the English Garden and heading towards Bogenhausen and Berg am Laim. It then goes via the Werksviertel district near Ostbahnhof and the city centre.

The marathon weekend began on Friday with the first Munich School Run, which drew about 4,000 pupils to the Olympic Park. A stage programme there will run through Sunday, with discussions involving athletes, bands, DJs and about 50 brands and exhibitors.
