19-year-old seriously hurt in van rollover

A 19-year-old van driver was seriously injured when his vehicle overturned in Gunskirchen, in the Wels-Land district, on Thursday. Police said he swerved onto the road shoulder to avoid an oncoming car, ORF reported.

The driver, from the Freistadt district, was travelling on a municipal road in the Au bei der Traun district towards Lambach shortly after 1pm. He moved onto the shoulder because the road was narrow and an oncoming car was driven by a 21-year-old Hungarian man.

The van driver apparently failed to see a tree stump beside the road and the vehicle overturned. A nurse who happened to be nearby provided first aid until emergency services arrived. The injured man was flown by rescue helicopter to Klinikum Wels.
