The likely closure of frozen-food producer Ardo’s plant in Groß-Enzersdorf threatens around 500 farming businesses and more than 200 jobs, ORF reported. Residents and farmers in the Marchfeld region are concerned, while politicians are still hoping to persuade the company’s Belgian owners to reconsider.
Talks between Ardo and politicians broke down on Wednesday. A street survey by ORF found fears that the closure would also affect smaller suppliers and businesses in the region.
Farmers have invested heavily in response to Ardo’s requests, Johann Schauern of Wittau told ORF. Many switched to organic farming and spent tens of thousands of euros on machinery and equipment that may no longer be useful to them.
Residents also voiced concern for employees, including older workers who may struggle to find new jobs. The farmers and employees affected by the planned closure declined to comment publicly to ORF.
Another Marchfeld company, Schneider’s Gemüseland, also produces frozen vegetables. Spar has said it will expand its cooperation with the company, but a full takeover of Ardo’s production is considered unlikely. One example is leaf spinach production.
Politicians plan to seek further talks with Ardo’s Belgian owner family. The company has maintained its plan to close the plant in 2027.
