The Landeck Tunnel, a bypass linking the motorway with the Reschen road, will close completely for several weeks from Sunday evening for construction work, ORF reports. About 8,000 vehicles a day will instead travel through Landeck and Zams.

The closure is expected to last until December 7. Work is under way on a new escape and rescue tunnel, required under new safety rules. About 3,000 metres of the tunnel have been excavated so far, and crews now need to close the existing tunnel to build a ventilation recess.

The diversion is expected to cause delays for commuters from the Oberes Gericht region, through-traffic travelling to and from the Reschen area, and residents of Landeck and Zams. Traffic officers will prevent lorries from using municipal roads through residential areas. Bus routes will also change, with some stops moved and some services following different routes.

Additional traffic lights and left-turn lanes have been installed to manage traffic. The mayors of Landeck and Zams said the closure would test both towns and urged residents to limit car journeys where possible.

ASFINAG began modernising the tunnel last year and will continue the work until 2030. The company is investing 292 million euros in the project. Further full closures are expected during the construction period.
