The University and Provincial Sports Centre Hallein-Rif has marked 40 years as a place where elite athletes and recreational sportspeople train side by side, ORF reported. The centre in the Tennengau region has served everyone from school classes to pensioner groups.
Since opening in 1986, Rif has been home to Olympic champions, world champions and emerging athletes. The anniversary celebration focused on memories rather than sporting records, with three-time Nordic combined Olympic champion Felix Gottwald among those reflecting on the centre’s history.
The centre’s early years were not always smooth. Its swimming hall fell into disrepair just a few years after opening and drew negative attention. Rif later developed into a training facility for the university, the armed forces, youth and recreational sport, as well as Austria’s elite athletes.
The Salzburg Austria team of the 1990s trained there, as did judo champion Ludwig Paischer. Wolfgang Becker, who led the centre for 25 years, helped drive its expansion. Rif became a training ground for Olympic champions and world champions while continuing to introduce children to sport.
Four decades after its opening, the centre must meet the demands of elite sport as well as those of recreational athletes.
