Lower Austria has launched an information campaign on the planned refurbishment of the Danube bridge between Krems and Mautern, ORF reported on Wednesday. The state says a project website and other outreach will keep residents informed and ensure transparency.

The website will provide updates on the project and construction schedule, a video outlining the planned work, a list of frequently asked questions, a contact point for personal concerns and a newsletter. Printed information will also be mailed to households in surrounding municipalities.

The bridge, described as a historic Danube crossing, is to regain its original grey colour after refurbishment. The decision followed scientific investigations and consultation with the Federal Monuments Authority, according to a statement from Deputy Governor Udo Landbauer, who is responsible for transport.

The refurbishment has been the subject of debate for years. Krems Mayor Peter Molnar recently accused Landbauer of preventing a replacement bridge from being built in time, while Landbauer rejected the claim. The replacement bridge is considered necessary for the refurbishment and is due to be built in 2027.

Safety-related damage has led to restrictions on car and lorry traffic on the existing bridge since mid-May 2026. They are expected to remain in place until at least autumn 2028, with refurbishment work due to start that year. The overall project is expected to cost about 145 million euros.
