Prosecutors say Linz cashier caused €25,696 loss through discounts
A 23-year-old cashier at a Billa supermarket in Linz-Urfahr is due to stand trial on Wednesday afternoon over alleged unauthorised discounts that caused a loss of €25,696, ORF reports. He faces a charge of breach of trust at Linz Regional Court.
Prosecutors allege that between early 2025 and late November 2025, the cashier gave customers discounts of up to 50% without permission, damaging his employer. If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison.
The case came to light during an internal review by the supermarket’s sales management, according to the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten, as cited by ORF. The review was prompted by an unusually high figure for price reductions. A sales manager who reportedly uncovered the discounts has been called as a witness.
Prosecutors say the man quickly acknowledged giving the discounts to his employer, explaining that he had depression and acted “on reflex” because he wanted customers to respond positively. However, he has remained silent during formal questioning as a suspect, and investigators have no confession.
It is not clear whether he personally benefited from the discounts, whether he still works for the supermarket or whether the company is seeking compensation. The presumption of innocence applies.
