Vienna reports few violations after e-moped cycleway ban
Vienna has recorded few complaints since e-mopeds were banned from cycleways on October 1, ORF reported Tuesday. E-mopeds must now use the road.
Vienna police chief Gerhard Pürstl said he was “very satisfied” with the initial results, crediting clear rules and strict enforcement. Police stopped six e-mopeds using cycleways on the ban’s first day. Since the rule took effect, authorities have taken a single-digit number of offenders off the road, said Andrea Anders, interim head of the state traffic department.
To use an e-moped in regular road traffic, owners must meet the requirements for a two-wheeled light motorcycle. These include a licence plate, an inspection sticker, motor vehicle liability insurance and a driving licence. Riders must also wear helmets.
Vienna’s Office for Immediate Measures has found about 50 illegally abandoned e-mopeds since the start of the month. All have been disposed of, its head, Walter Hillerer, said. He said the office would act firmly against abandoned vehicles.
