A cross-party committee has launched a campaign against a proposed nationwide ban on noisy fireworks, SRF reported. The coalition includes representatives of the Swiss People’s Party, the Centre and the Swiss Trade Association.

The initiative, due to go to a national vote on November 29, seeks to ban the sale and use of all fireworks that generate noise, not only firecrackers and bangers. The campaign was launched in Bern.

Opponents say a blanket ban would threaten Swiss traditions, harm businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises, and restrict private and local celebrations. They argue the proposal is disproportionate because cantons and municipalities can already limit fireworks by time or location, require permits or impose targeted bans during periods of heightened danger, such as severe drought.

The committee says local authorities should continue using those measures rather than introducing a nationwide ban.
