The Lower Austria Youth Symphony Orchestra celebrated its 50th anniversary with a concert at the Grafenegg Auditorium over the weekend, ORF reported. The orchestra brings together about 85 musicians aged 15 to 22.
Founded as a string ensemble, it has grown into a major training ground for students at Lower Austria’s music and arts schools. The anniversary, said Tamara Ofenauer-Haas, managing director of the Lower Austria Music and Arts School Management, reflects five decades of continued investment in young musicians.
Leopold Schmetterer, who has worked with the orchestra as a tutor since 1975, conducted the opening of the anniversary concert with a festival march he composed. He said improved teacher training had raised students’ skills, allowing the orchestra to perform works suited to their abilities.
Young musicians join through an annual audition. Most study at music schools in Lower Austria, while some have begun studies at a music university or conservatory. Experienced tutors from the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler Orchestra support the players as they study orchestral works under established conductors.
