A 21-year-old man was seriously injured in a brawl at Schedifkaplatz, a square in Vienna’s Meidling district, on Saturday night, ORF reported. Police said three men had been provisionally arrested.

The injured man had several wounds that may have been inflicted with a knife. A police officer with medical training treated him until Vienna’s professional ambulance service arrived. He was then given emergency medical care and taken to a hospital’s shock room.

Police were alerted at about 9.30 p.m. by several callers who reported a fight involving a possible knife. At the scene, two companions of the injured man identified three nearby men as suspected participants. The suspects are Syrian nationals aged 19, 19 and 34.

Police were searching for other possible participants and the weapon. Initial reports suggested between 10 and 15 people had been involved, but the search had not been successful. The Vienna State Criminal Police Office’s South branch is investigating.
