B12, road safety, traffic accidents

Authorities plan to tighten safety measures on the B12 after four people died on the road this year, BR reports. The measures will apply to the stretch between the end of the A94 near Burghausen and the border crossing near Kirchdorf am Inn.

The speed limit will be set at 80 km/h throughout the stretch, alongside a continuous ban on overtaking. A heavily textured marking will be added along the centre of the road. It is designed to warn drivers with noise if they drive over it, and to be more easily detected by modern lane-keeping assistance systems.

New signs are expected to be installed soon and repeated at regular intervals. The Rottal-Inn district administration said the measures were agreed by the relevant authorities.

Four people have died on the road between Burghausen, in Altötting district, and the border with Austria this year. The district administration cited high traffic volumes, particularly heavy goods vehicles, and excessive speeds as contributing factors.

Authorities and police say a lasting improvement will depend on extending the motorway in the area, which is not expected within the next 10 years at the earliest. They also anticipate more traffic once the A3-A94 junction at Pocking is fully completed. The effectiveness of the new measures will be reviewed regularly based on crash figures.
