Parmelin to face news conference as resignation speculation grows

Swiss cabinet member Guy Parmelin is due to appear at a news conference at 11 a.m. Friday, as speculation continues over whether the 66-year-old politician from the canton of Vaud will resign, SRF reported. The Federal Chancellery announced the event. SRF said it would broadcast the conference live on SRF 1 and online.
Parmelin was elected to the Federal Council in December 2015. He first led the Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport, and has headed the Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research since 2019.
One of the key moments of his tenure was the Geneva summit on June 16, 2021. Parmelin welcomed US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin at Villa La Grange and held separate talks with them about Switzerland’s relations with the United States and Russia.
