Carinthian programme grows to 70 groups as demand hits record
A Carinthian programme that helps older people stay mentally and physically fit has grown to 70 groups, with demand at its highest level in 25 years, ORF reported. The “Mitten im Leben” initiative, run by the Catholic Education Centre, marked its 25th anniversary in Klagenfurt on Thursday.
As people in Carinthia live longer, the risk of dementia also rises. The programme uses targeted activities, community and lifelong learning to support older people’s wellbeing. Groups meet every one or two weeks for activities including dancing, mental exercises and conversation.
Christine Fasching, 75, said her group dances, does mental exercises and arithmetic, and spends time chatting. “You have to do something,” she said.
Ulrike Schwertner, a specialist adviser for the programme, said people can continue learning into old age and have talents and experiences to share. She said municipalities are increasingly supporting the growing groups, with some paying for group leaders’ training.
The programme particularly needs volunteer group leaders in Upper Carinthia and the Gail Valley. The Catholic Education Centre trains them over the course of a year. A total of 122 group leaders have completed the training in the programme’s 25 years.
