The person who left a large survival cache in the Karwendel mountains near Lenggries remains unknown after authorities received no useful tips, BR reports.

A hunter found nine hidden barrels last summer in a steep, hard-to-reach part of a nature reserve. They contained food, some of it past its expiry date since 2014, as well as medication, batteries, clothes, a sleeping bag, dog food, a tent and a camp bed. The supplies appeared to be intended for use in a disaster.

Three reports were sent to the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district office, but none provided useful information, its spokeswoman Marlies Peischer told BR24. The case will now be closed. Leaving rubbish or other objects in a nature reserve is prohibited, so the barrels had to be removed.

Because vehicles could not reach the cache and the barrels were too heavy to carry, about 40 Bundeswehr soldiers from Bad Reichenhall and 25 pack animals took part in the removal. The animals were mostly mules, along with three Haflingers and a donkey. The team used ropes and carrying frames to bring the barrels down a steep slope, then transported them nearly four kilometres to a road. They were taken from there to Greiling for proper disposal.
